Mamata Banerjee may project the Trinamool Congress as the saviour of the poor and downtrodden in West Bengal, but her party workers were left struggling to do emergency damage control on Sunday.
Prasun Dutta, a 32-year-old who was frustrated after a promised job in the railways never materialised, set himself on fire in front of the railway minister's house on Harish Mukherjee Street in south Kolkata.
Dutta hails from Khamarpara village under Bashberia police station in Hooghly district, and had been working as a junior technician for a local cable TV network.
At noon, Dutta poured kerosene on himself and set himself afire. But he was unable to bear the pain as the flames engulfed his body, and jumped into the filthy Tala Canal, which passes through the locality.
Locals sprung to his rescue and he was immediately rushed to the state- run Bangur Hospital.
He was later shifted to the more upscale Belle View Nursing Home by Trinamool leaders.
At Bangur Hospital, Prashun said he is a " dedicated Trinamool Congress worker", and set himself on fire as he did not get the railways job, promised him two years ago by the leaders of the party in Bashberia.
The self- immolation bid is said to be the first of its kind in the state. The Trinamool refused to comment on the incident.
