CBI arrests Kalmadi for role in CWG scam

New Delhi, Apr.25 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested sacked Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organizing Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi in connection with his role in the AM Films and TSR scams.

The arrest order was carried out after the CBI had questioned Kalmadi extensively on the two incidents, particularly on the documents relating to the two deals.

The CBI had asked Kalmadi to appear before it on Monday to clarify some new issues which surfaced during the visit of the agency's officials to London in connection with Queen's Baton Relay scam.

Kalmadi had earlier expressed his inability to appear before the CBI citing his foreign visit, saying he would return home only after April 19. But even after returning from his visit abroad, he did not turn up before the sleuths saying he was still not in Delhi, sources said.

Kalmadi has been accused of sanctioning payments to AM Films and AM Car at rates that were hugely inflated.

The AM Car and Van Hire company in London was engaged during Queen's Baton Relay in 2009 to provide services like taxis for the guests and OC members. The AM films was hired to provide display monitors during the event.

Earlier Kalmadi's aides had justified hiring AM Films and AM Car... by saying other bids were not competitive but now the CBI has found that the names of other bidders given by Kalmadi were all forged and fake. (ANI)

Film Review: Dum Maaro Dum

Director: Rohan Sippy
Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Rana Daggubati, Prateik, Bipasha Basu and others
Rating: **

Bollywood has showcased Goa in different ways. A great place to unwind (Dil Chahta Hai), an ideal location for screwball comedies (Golmaal series) or even cute love stories (Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd). This one explores the beach town's prime export, drugs.
"Rape, tourist ki maut, prostitution, all crimes are linked to drugs," says a cocky politician. He skipped pollution and population? Anyway, he's requesting angry young ACP, Vishnu Kamath (Abhishek Bachchan), to consider the task of sweeping Goa off all illegal intoxicants. With little hesitation, Kamath accepts the job. But only under the condition that he gets to pick his team and that he is allowed to play by his own rules (unlike other action heroes who love being forced into teams and pushed around by rule books?).
Kamath teams up with Rane (a very animated Govind Namdeo) and Mercy (random Goan cop) to bust every rave party and shady hotel room in Goa. Mercilessly kick-slapping just about anyone, Kamath cracks skulls, shoots bulbs, breaks furniture and generally makes a lot of noise. And suddenly, to accelerate the film, we break into a montage and Kamath breaks into a rap. The lyrics go, "Thai! Thai!" and so do the visuals. Soon Kamath has slaughtered druggies, peddlers and if you go by numbers, most of Goa. If not by smashing their skulls, then by his horrendous rapping.

One of Kamath's arrests happens to be teen-footballer Lorry (Prateik Babbar), a first-time cocaine-carrier who wanted to jumpstart his career. And yes, this 'carrier and career' reference is used twice in the movie. Though a silly reference, this will hopefully educate those who pronounce the two in a similar way. Lorry's parallel story is too boring and inconsequential to the larger plot and can be safely avoided. Lorry's best friend, DJ Joki (Rana Daggubati) wants to save him and volunteers to help Kamath in his pursuits. He does so between dancing, singing and making love to girlfriend Zoe (Bipasha Basu). A certified airhostess, Zoe wants to fly for an international carrier but ends up becoming a carrier (of drugs) and her career is restricted to serving Goa's most illustrious drug lord, Lorsa Biscuta (Aditya Pancholi). Now, Kamath wants to bite into Biscuta and his cronies, so you do the rest of the connections.
The film's post-production is crisp as every smash is haunting and will get hearts pounding. So what if Deepika's item song is weary and didn't do the job! Although, this time we can't even blame Pritam for a failed item song, since it's just his take on the original cult classic. Abhishek is enthusiastic, his punches aren't. With a little less gnashing of teeth and better dialogue delivery, give it another 25 movies and Junior B will be the next big action hero. Prateik really needs to attend to his 'cranky-whiney-baby' voice that is disconnected from the rest of him. Rana is a promising find and is surely here to stay.

Oh, and yes, there's a Michael Barbossa who controls the entire drug scene and is rumoured to be the master of the universe. So will Kamath find out who is the great Barbossa? Will Biscuta crumble under pressure or gobble Kamath without chewing? Will Lorry be sorry at the end of this story? Will Joki ever realise that a DJ is supposed to be behind a console and not slinging a guitar and belching out love songs? These questions are best unanswered. So, I will leave you with the stimulating moral and parting line of the film, "If you die in Goa, you're stranded in Goa forever." What does this even mean? Go figure.

Kochi Tuskers keen on Ganguly if Jayawardene leaves

Indian Premier League (IPL) debutants Kochi Tuskers Kerala indicated Wednesday they could opt for former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who remained unsold in the players' auction, if their skipper Mahela Jayawardene has to return home to prepare for Sri Lanka's tour of England.

Kochi Tuskers director Mukesh Patel said that they are yet to make any request to the Indian cricket board for Jayawardene's replacement but if the situation arises, Ganguly could be one of their options.

'We haven't asked for Jayawardene's replacement because we don't know the status on the availability of Sri Lankan players. But if there is a need, we may opt for Ganguly,' Patel told IANS.

As for Ganguly, he dropped a hint Wednesday that he may after all play in the IPL's fourth season.

During an interview to a Bengali channel, when asked whether he will play in the league, Ganguly said: '...Dekhte paabe (you will see). I am keeping my fingers crossed.'

Ganguly has always been linked with Kochi Tuskers, who earlier wanted the southpaw from out of auction but their request was turned down by the Indian board.

Both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Sri Lanka (SLC) have failed to find a solution on the availability of Sri Lankan cricketers for the rest of the IPL season.

Kochi Tuskers had also asked for Ganguly as a replacement for injured Australian recruit Steve Smith. But IPL rules did not permit this as Smith's base price of $200,000 was lower than that of Ganguly's $400,000.

Zindagi Na Milege Dobara.....

Zindagi Na Milege Dobara's teaser has Hrithik, Abhay and Farhan flaunting their chiseled abs. Is B'wood's obsession with lean eternal?

Bollywood's lead heroes have always been voluntary shape-shifters. Every time one gains popularity for a certain waist size, others fall in line to chisel themselves into the same. But this wasn't the case back in the day. There was a time in Hindi cinema when one's physique didn't matter and Sanjeev Kumar was a lead hero and fat-burners were the least popular drug.

And if you thought, we're just quoting pre-historic examples, you thought wrong. Remember, Rishi Kapoor confidently twisting his wiggly-comfortably-round self in Chandni? Or perhaps even Govinda at the peak of his career, gyrating better than Munni or Sheila in his seriously overweight state in Sajan Chale Sasural. Neither of them shaped up or needed to ship out on account of their excess flab. It was a blissfully corpulent world.

It was only by the fag end of the 80s, when a new look evolved, one that the common man could easily identify with. It was the 'everyman' body type, skinny, yet not malnourished. Salman who pioneered this look in Maine Pyaar Kiya decided to change the rules of the game nine years later, when he beefed up for his shirtless jig in Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya. While some found it provocative, others just gushed and blushed. And before we knew it the entire industry looked like something hanging in a mutton shop.

And considering how competitive Bollywood is, no one was spared from this anaerobic mania. Not even Bollywood's baadshah, Shah Rukh Khan who joined the herd in Om Shanti Om at the age of 42, adding another attribute to the concept of a perfect Bollywood body, the six-pack abs. And trends in Bollywood, though momentary would explode across the board, right from the highest paid actor to the struggler slumming it out at a Lokhandwala gym, everyone just had sport it.

The 'big is better' theory faded out by 2008, as a scrawny young thing called Imran Khan decided to redefine cool and lean became the new mean. Those who had beefed-up, chucked their dumbbells and signed up for Yoga classes. And since the supposed future of Bollywood (Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Imran Khan) began endorsing this slim sutra, even seasoned actors (like Aamir Khan in 3 Idiots) were forced to get into the game.

And while our Bollywood biggies are now happily prancing around in their slender size-zero bodies, we wonder if the toned look is here to stay. With Hrithik's meticulously sculpted body in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, we would place our money on the pumping steroids.

Shanti Bhushan submitted a statement of account at Rs.1,367,172, 287 for the last ten years. He revealed he owns three houses and two flats in Noida, a plot in Banglore, a house in Allahabad, agricultural land in Roorkee (Uttarakhand) and farmland in Noida measuring 10,000 square meters.

Anna Hazare to end his fast as Govt agrees to redraft Lokpal Bill

Gandhian crusader Anna Hazare scored a stupendous victory on Friday night with a cornered UPA government accepting all his demands on how a new Lokpal Bill would be drafted for presentation in Parliament's Monsoon session.
Hazare, however, said he would end his fast around 10 am on Saturday, the time by when a government order (GO) constituting a joint drafting committee - co-chaired by a senior minister (most likely, Pranab Mukherjee) and legal luminary Shanti Bhushan, Hazare's nominee - is expected.

Anna Hazare blesses a girl at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Friday.
"It is the people's voice that you (the government) are listening to. If you are still deaf, people will teach you a lesson. I am ready to sacrifice my life for this," Hazare said on Friday.
After a final meeting with Hazare's representatives, human resources development minister Kapil Sibal finally announced the formation of the joint panel and said it would commence the drafting work as soon as possible so that the Bill is ready for the cabinet's approval by June 30.

Besides the two chairpersons, the committee would comprise five ministers and five civil society representatives.

Who is ANNA HAZARE ?

1. Who is Anna Hazare?
An ex-army man. Fought 1965 Indo-Pak War

2. What's so special about him?
He built a village Ralegaon Siddhi in Ahamad Nagar district, Maharashtra
3. So what?
This village is a self-sustained model village. Energy is produced in the village itself from solar power, biofuel and wind mills.
In 1975, it used to be a poverty clad village. Now it is one of the richest village in India. It has become a model for self-sustained, eco-friendly & harmonic village.

4. Ok,...?
This guy, Anna Hazare was awarded Padma Bhushan and is a known figure for his social activities.

5. Really, what is he fighting for?
He is supporting a cause, the amendment of a law to curb corruption in India.
6. How that can be possible?
He is advocating for a Bil, The Lok Pal Bill (The Citizen Ombudsman Bill), that will form an autonomous authority who will make politicians (ministers), beurocrats (IAS/IPS) accountable for their deeds.

8. It's an entirely new thing right..?
In 1972, the bill was proposed by then Law minister Mr. Shanti Bhushan. Since then it has been neglected by the politicians and some are trying to change the bill to suit thier theft (corruption).

7. Oh.. He is going on a hunger strike for that whole thing of passing a Bill ! How can that be possible in such a short span of time?
The first thing he is asking for is: the government should come forward and announce that the bill is going to be passed.
Next, they make a joint committee to DRAFT the LOK PAL BILL. 50% goverment participation and 50% public participation. Because you cant trust the government entirely for making such a bill which does not suit them.

8. Fine, What will happen when this bill is passed?
A LokPal will be appointed at the centre. He will have an autonomous charge, say like the Election Commission of India. In each and every state, Lokayukta will be appointed. The job is to bring all alleged party to trial in case of corruptions within 1 year. Within 2 years, the guilty will be punished. Not like, Bofors scam or Bhopal Gas Tragedy case, that has been going for last 25 years without any result..

9. Is he alone? Whoelse is there in the fight with Anna Hazare?
Baba Ramdev, Ex. IPS Kiran Bedi, Social Activist Swami Agnivesh, RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal and many more.
Prominent personalities like Aamir Khan is supporting his cause.

10. Ok, got it. What can I do?
At least we can spread the message. How?
Putting status message, links, video, changing profile pics.
At least we can support Anna Hazare and the cause for uprooting corruption from India.
At least we can hope that his Hunger Strike does not go in vain.
At least we can pray for his good health.

Anna's stir becomes India's chorus, but is the PM listening?

A protester presents the corruption saga of India in a nutshell by listing major scams over the years.
On the charge that he had been impatient in starting his agitation even though the government had initiated the process of drafting the Lokpal Bill, he wrote, "I would urge you to tell me exactly what processes are underway. You say your Group of Ministers (GoM) is drafting the anti-corruption law. Many members of this GoM have such a shady past that if effective anti-corruption systems had been place, some of them would have been behind bars." Even as support for Hazare built up, the government seemed to be stuck for a response.
Union ministers Kapil Sibal, Ambika Soni and Veerappa Moily spoke in general terms. Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan described the fast as "premature", saying that in a democracy debates should be held before a policy was framed. No direct offer of talks was made to Hazare.
The government and Congress brass, including party chief Sonia Gandhi and the PM, are expected to soon take a view on how to douse the fire ignited by the social activist.
Sonia, away in Kerala for electioneering, was expected to step in to retrieve the situation on her return to the capital on Wednesday night.
Party sources said she was not averse to the demand of setting up a joint committee to draft the anti- corruption Bill.

On the ground, there was little doubt that the Hazare was articulating public anger on corruption.
At Jantar Mantar, where he was holding his fast -- the number of those fasting along with the Gandhian swelled to almost 170 on Wednesday -- this was having its effect. Two politicians - former BJP leader Uma Bharti and Om Prakash Chautala of the Indian National Lok Dal - got a taste of the public mood when they were nearly chased away. Hazare later appealed to his supporters to allow politicians in.
"Chasing people away is against Gandhian principles of peaceful protest. I have appealed to them (politicians) not to come here. But if someone does that, they can sit here. No one can take advantage of the situation," he said.
As the anti-corruption agitation gained ground with state elections already underway, Sharad Pawar, who had been on the group of ministers (GoM) to draft the anti- corruption legislation, quit the ministerial body on Wednesday evening.
That was after Hazare had expressed dismay over the fact that Pawar owned large tracts of land in Maharashtra. Other members of the committee, headed by Pranab Mukherjee are Moily, Sibal, P. Chidambaram, A. K. Antony, Mamata Banerjee, M. K. Alagiri and P. K. Bansal.
The Indian Against Corruption, the organisation behind the protest, maintained that it had been flooded with reports of people across the country skipping a meal or two while some are observing a day's fast as well.
"It is not just about deterioration in Anna's health. The condition of anyone who is on a fast can turn bad. The ball is firmly in government's court. We hope some sense prevails. So far, we haven't heard from the government," said Arvind Kejriwal, the principal organiser of the movement.
The Congress chose not to precipitate matters although, officially, it stuck to stand, saying Hazare should not set any deadline for enacting the law. A working group of the Sonia- headed National Advisory Council (NAC) has agreed with nearly all provisions of the 'Jan Lokpal Bill' drafted by anti-graft activists under the guidance of Karnataka Lokayukta Santosh Hegde and senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan.
Congress sources said Sonia was keen to give more teeth to the proposed legislation. Jayanthi Natarajan also hinted at this view in the party. "While many people will not agree on the Bill and have different opinions, the NAC and other forums are already discussing the matter. The far- reaching changes suggested by Hazare need broad discussions before a final draft can be scripted," she said.
Asked if the party considered Hazare an RSS agent, she said," I have not read the reports you are referring to. What I say from this platform is the official point of view." Sibal said the government was open to all possible suggestions.
"We were asked to commit in principle to a joint committee before April 5. We said we need time for wider consultations. This will happen, we are not opposed to any of these issues," he added.
Soni, the information and broadcasting minister, said: "The fact that the PM favoured a GoM shows his credibility. We are ready for talks. The government is serious about fighting corruption." Moily, the law minister, said the government was open to suggestions even though it was "anxious to introduce the bill in the next session". He said the government had not rejected the demand for a joint drafting committee. "We said we were open. We never closed our mind even on the formation of joint committee," Moily added.
